Carrollton is believed to have received its name from the hometown of early settlers, who came from Carrollton, Illinois. On May 16, 1878, the city was officially named and the first post office was opened in Carrollton. Some of Carrollton's first settlers arrived in the 1840s. Looking for a better life, these early settlers purchased land from The Peters Colony and planted crops, raised cattle and sheep, and built homes and churches.

The development of railroads in Carrollton brought great change to the area. Carrollton rapidly transformed from a sleepy agricultural community to a center of bustling business and professional activity. As the Dallas/Ft. Worth area grew over the years, the housing markets in surrounding areas boomed as people sought affordable housing. Due to Carrollton’s location on Interstate 35, the city has become a popular choice among new families.
